What Doesn’t Look Good
Remind yourself of what DOESN’T look good!
I was helping a friend out by modelling in a fashion show for her. So, I drove to her shop for a trial run. As I thought we would be modelling shoes and boots, I put on a short, black skirt for the first time in about a hundred years and decided that if the customers were to stand any chance of seeing the shoes, I would have to forego my usual nearly-black hosiery and wear flesh-coloured tights instead. I added a fantastic pair of elegant black suede courts and looked at myself in the mirror. What a horrible sight!
I saw exactly why I never, ever wear skin-coloured tights with black shoes and a short, black skirt. I have to add here that my legs aren’t half bad so it was not the lumps and bumps that made me cringe. And it didn’t make me look short and squat, either - I’m 5′ 5″ so not exactly titchy. It just wasn’t ME.
I am a Dramatic and I like to make an impact but this made me look very ordinary and I didn’t like it one bit. As far as I was concerned, my personality had disappeared down the toilet. Later in the evening, when I’d changed into black tights, I felt a rush of relief. I felt like me again and the other ladies agreed that perhaps I should stick to what actually suits me in future!
It sometimes takes a situation like this to remind yourself what DOESN’T look good! If you get the chance, it might help you to try something on that no longer works for you. Not that I’m suggesting that you be as daft as me and leave the house dressed in your less-than-wonderful creation (at least it was dark when I did it, and only three other people witnessed the sorry sight).
Perhaps when you’re out shopping, you could throw caution to the wind and try on a colour that you know makes you look perfectly hideous? Go on! I dare you!
- If you’re a Spring, why not try on something in dusty blue or fuchsia and make yourself look miserable?
- Autumns could make themselves look quite ghastly with ballet shoe pink or, even worse, light grey.
- There’s plenty of acid green and coral pink around at the moment for Summers to try on and feel sick!
- And Winters could be ferried off to hospital if they dare emerge from the dressing room in khaki or beige.
Maybe just the thought of all this horridness will help you understand what NOT to wear. Remember, life is too short to compromise. Why wear anything that makes you less than gorgeous? Only wear the colours and styles that make you look absolutely fabulous - all the time, even when you’re doing the gardening / cleaning / decorating. And this is not for anyone else’s benefit - it’s for you, because you’re worth it.
From the little try-on session, I also discovered some new things that I look rather good in - if I say so myself! You never stop learning in this game of life, do you?
