Look Like Overdressed Barbie

Don’t go rushing out to buy whatever you’ve seen on the catwalks, or on the internet, or in a magazine. What if you end up looking like an overdressed Barbie doll in all those excessively mad accessories (and that’s just the men!)?

First of all, you need to decide what kind of body shape you have and, to do that, you need to take a long hard look at yourself in the mirror. You can do it. Oh yes, you can. You are utterly gorgeous – you just won’t admit it, will you? (Put yourself in my hands for 10 minutes and I would show you just how beautiful you really are – but that’s for another time.)

How to wear the Cinched Silhouette

Cinched Silhouette by Marc JacobsIf you have no discernable waist, don’t worry about highlighting your waist with this look (because you haven’t got one). Concentrate on your lean silhouette, using your best darkest neutral from head to foot and a straighter cut of jacket. Go for minimum texture fabric in a structured shape.

Just because it says that a key item is a belt doesn’t mean you have to wear one. Be different. Dress your own body. The late Princess of Wales had a straight body shape like yours, and once she’d discovered this and abandoned the frumpy Sloane look of flared, waisted skirts and voluminous blouses, her lean, sheath-like dress choices transformed her.

If you have an hourglass figure, meaning that you have a very noticeable waist, then you too could go for the Cinched Silhouette but the difference will be that you should accentuate your shape by adding a belt and / or a nipped-in waisted jacket in a softer fabric that drapes your body rather than hugs it. And please make sure that the trousers (or skirt) are shaped over your curvy bottom, and don’t just hang there like wet lard!

Kate Winslet has an hourglass figure and wears rounded shapes better than sharp angles. Try soft wool or silks perhaps, and remember my mistake – stripes over curves just don’t work!
