Hardly suitable to read the sports news!

Friday, April 1st, 2011 by Kim Bolsover

Little Black Dress with pearls - hardly suitable to read the sports news! I had the misfortune to catch a fleeting glimpse of a lady presenter on the BBC News recently.

She had a neat blonde bob, was dressed in a Little Black Dress (LBD) with a single strand of pearls at her throat and – oh my giddy aunt – was presenting the latest sports news from the world of soccer.

No, no, no!

Dear Morticia (or whatever your name is),

You are giving off completely incongruent messages!

LBD + single strand of pearls = CLASSIC (smart, formal)

Dressed like this, you should have been presenting the opening night of the latest ballet from the Royal Opera House, or telling the world from the bowels of The National Gallery that a missing Van Gogh has been discovered…

but NOT announcing that Munchminster United have just sacked their thirteenth manager in as many years!

Sports news = NATURAL (casual, friendly)

Now I’m not asking you to turn up in a track suit and trainers to present the sports news but you should at least TRY wearing clothes that are congruent with the message you’re presenting.

If you were due to dash off to a theatre engagement straight after work, then you could perhaps have worn a colourful cardigan over the LBD with a long, dangly necklace of coloured beads, and then swiftly changed into a neat velvet bolero and the single strand of pearls in the taxi…

But you didn’t… so I still have no idea what you were talking about.  I was too busy wondering why on earth you were so over-dressed to present the sports news!

Three Questions of Buying

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011 by Kim Bolsover

Hi Kim, Loved your “When that loud bell rings” article.

I have always used the ‘Three Questions of Buying’.  This relates to clothing, accessories etc.

Question 1

  • Is it a “good” colour?  One that actually likes you?

Question 2

  • Is it a “good” shape for you?  One that works for your shape?

Question 3 (the most important one)

  • Do you actually like it?  Do you want to take it home and do you want to wear/use it?

As you well know, you can put someone into something that looks good on them, but it in no way matches their personality.

Personality and personal likes are definitely the most important thing.

Thanks for this one, and all your other great articles.

Kind regards,
Rita
