Absolutely Love It!
You have to absolutely love it!
Recently, I was looking around in a smart boutique where a lady was trying on a faux fur gilet in a warm reddish brown. Apparently, she’d asked for it to be put by and had come back to pay for it and take it home. She tried it on very briefly, stole a quick glance in the mirror, and took it off - not exactly indicative of someone loving what they were just about to buy! To be honest, it looked pretty awful - it was totally the wrong colour for her and wasn’t her style either! But who am I to go sticking my nose in? Well, actually, I’m me - and sometimes I just can’t help myself.
So, I picked up a beautiful blue-grey and soft white faux fur three-quarter coat and asked her to try it on. “Just humour me,” was my urgent plea. “I’d really love to see you in this.”
And suddenly, this lovely lady was transformed. You should have seen her, hugging the coat around her, stroking the fur, turning round and round and round, looking at herself. She loved it. She looked wonderful in it, and she knew it.
I explained that, as she had cool colouring, the warm reddish brown just took over and clashed with her skin tone. It made her look yellow and pallid, while the blue-grey jacket made her look healthy and vibrant. The straight style of the gilet had been totally wrong for her body shape. It had just hung there like a wet blanket while the shaped blue-grey jacket outlined her body and gave her a curvy silhouette.
We talked and talked. I suggested adding a rose pink scarf and a matching lipstick to lift the whole look, both of which frightened her to death as she had not worn either for decades. Most Naturals shy away from wearing either make-up or accessories when just a slick of lipstick and either a simple scarf or necklace could make such a difference. It’s such a shame that most of us never learn how.
We even managed to find some earrings that were the right shape and size for her scale, but weren’t quite the right colour. She told me that she knew a good jeweller who could make exactly what she was after and that she probably had a pinkish lipstick at home somewhere. She promised to at least have a go with the new ideas, and happily paid for her new jacket and we said goodbye.
The shop didn’t lose out, either, as both jackets were about the same price, and they ended up with one extremely happy customer.
Here’s her lovely letter to me:
“Dear Kim,
I am thoroughly enjoying wearing the jacket with one reservation - people will insist on stroking it! I am seriously thinking of giving it a name, buying a collar and lead, and entering it for Crufts!
The earrings are under construction and I have bought a lovely scarf. The economy of the local area is rapidly improving!
I have even unearthed (disinterred might be a better word) a lipstick which had been mouldering away at the bottom of a drawer for donkeys’ years. I duly applied it, much to the amazement of my husband who is currently trying to decide whether I am having a) a geriatric crisis or b) an affair! To the detriment of both my self esteem and morale, it is the former which appears to be the favourite explanation for my eccentric behaviour!
Thanking you (I think) for your advice, Regards, PD.”
You have to absolutely love it!
My point here is that before you buy something, you have to absolutely love it. You should love what it does to you, how it makes you feel, the effect it has on you, your face, your silhouette. If you don’t like what you see in the mirror, then put it back and save your hard-earned cash. Wait until you find something that makes you look and feel gorgeous. Life is too short to waste on compromises - only the best is good enough for you.
Find out which colours make you look fabulous, and then wear nothing else.
