Suzie has light colouring
Part Four of a great new series of guest articles from Sue Carter, image consultant extraordinaire!
Series Title: How Image Consultants CAN work together!
Have you ever colour analysed a fellow image professional? I have, on several occasions, and I have to say that it can be nerve wracking.
We all KNOW what suits us and aren’t afraid to say so; after all it is our business – our reason to be. If you are wisely nodding your head then you are in for a bit of a shock because I totally agree with Kim that we cannot be our own colour analyst. Our brains get in the way.
Take me for instance. I loathe the mention of the word navy but, being honest, I look pretty damn hot in it with bright accessories. So I call it dark blue and wear it with hot pink or a bright blue or both as the whim takes me. It took another image coach to point this out to me and get me to try on a navy dress. Left to my own devices, I’d still be looking tepid instead of smokin’.
This brings me to Suzie.
The first time I met Suzie was on the Advanced Colour Analysis Day. She looked so put together in her purple dress, jacket and immaculate make up. I was quite envious but as the day wore on I began to think she didn’t look quite right. I didn’t know why but it was like an itch left unscratched.
It wasn’t until I saw the group photo from the event that I knew what it was. From the neck down she looked amazing as did her face and hair but somehow, to me, they didn’t belong together – like the kid’s book where you can make up different people by flipping over the pages.
I saw her again on the Wardrobe & Shopping Day and all her bits belonged together. The hair went with the head which went with the clothes and shoes. She flowed. She looked right.
Suzie and I got together and analysed each other’s colours
I’ll write about my turn later but it was Kim’s blog about LIGHT colours that made me go out of turn with this series of stories ‘Suzie and Sue Work Together’.
The moment I sat Suzie down and looked at her with my colour eye I could see that she is LIGHT; light skin, light eyes, light hair. She calls out for light, pretty colours that blend together and paint a soft picture. Anything deep immediately puts the colour centre stage and not her face. High contrast in her fabrics does the same and that’s why the purple dress and white/purple jacket didn’t work for her.
Suzie was like a lot of women who are told LIGHT but hear pale, uninteresting, wishy-washy and pastels. She needed to be shown the colours and she how they work together. It wasn’t enough to give her a SUMMER swatch either as many of the colours were too intense for her. We needed to work through the colours together to see what really worked.
I picked out Suzie’s best colours from my drapes and ended up with a bunch of sweet peas tied up in a silver grey ribbon.
She doesn’t need a wallet, just a packet of sweet pea seeds from Tesco.
Like most of us Suzie had the colours in her wardrobe already and it was just a case of weeding out the others, the clothes that no longer worked with her new palette. A few well-chosen tops and she was good to go.
The moral of this story? Well, there are several, so here goes:
- Ask someone you trust to analyse your colours for you
- Ask, “Does the head match the body?”
- Do you paint a picture with words for your clients? A vision for them to take shopping?
And if those of you who know my views on Navy want to see the dress then you’ll have to wait for another blog.
Sue Carter can be found via twenty4carat and Suzie Rice via Suzie Rice they are both not scared of working with other professionals in the field. In fact, they both really enjoy it!
Have you worked with another image consultant on your own colour and style? What did you learn from them that surprised you? Are you willing to share it with the world? I am writing a blog post called Things an image consultant got me to try and I would love your input. Send an e-mail to 24C@suecarter.biz saying if I can mention your name in the actual blog post, with a website address if you have one. Thanks in advance see you on the blog. Sue
