I can't tell you how many times I've heard about consultants who just go off and pay for yet another training course in a futile effort to discover that elusive magic ingredient that will make their business work.

Let me tell you something - YOU are the magic ingredient in your business, but before I digress (as usual) and expound at length on how only YOU can control the outcome of your business, this is exactly the reason why we've created this website - so that I have somewhere to write about it and so that you can access this kind of encouragement and help at any time.

In my experience after 28 years in this business, I've realised the sad fact that a large proportion of image consultants do little or nothing with their new skills. I was talking this over with a good friend only last week. She trained as an image consultant 6 years ago with a well-known UK company. Since then she's been meeting up with the other 5 trainees every couple of months. Today, only one of them still works in the image business, and that's only part time too!

You go home after your training feeling totally inspired and looking forward to being an independent business owner, earning an income, meeting new people, ready to change people's lives with your new-found skills - only to find that life, family, work, or health, get in the way. Your new business just never gets the time or energy it deserves so you often abandon your dreams and the world is poorer for it.

Why does all this happen?

I've been where you are

I know what it's like to sit alone, hoping, wishing and praying that someone, anyone would help me with a tip here or a new idea there which might inject some new energy into me and my business and help me move ahead (in fact, sideways would have been good too; at least I'd have been moving!).

After about 10 years of half-heartedly running a once-in-a-blue-moon colour consultancy and realising I was getting absolutely nowhere, I managed to pluck up some courage to approach a well-established image consultant who had encouraged me to follow my own dream some years before. I wanted to see if I could spend some time 'shadowing' her to learn and maybe pick up some tips and ideas, but she wanted oceans of money that I just didn't have at the time, so even though I'd had the gumption to ask for help, it just wasn't within reach.

All I really needed was some grass-roots stuff; I didn't need a full training course, just a bit of one, or a chance to share some ideas with someone in the same business as me, anything at all really but most image consultants, I found, were not keen to share their knowledge (and, I'm afraid to say, there's still plenty of them out there now) so I continued to sit alone, isolated, becoming more and more disconsolate and unmotivated to do anything to improve my business and, therefore, my income. And, on a regular basis during those early years, I abandoned my image business and went back to a J.O.B. which, by the way, means Just Over Broke.

Over the years, I've found that to learn anything new in this business means either spending money I probably haven't got on a very expensive training course or buying a book of generalised trivia for £6.99, and there doesn't seem to be much else available in between.
